Sumner County Schools TEACH Sumner Program: THRIVE
Are you wanting to become a special education or elementary school teacher? TEACH Sumner is partnering with Austin Peay State University (APSU) to offer a licensure program to prepare candidates with the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in the classroom. A requirement of the program is that you are hired as a job embedded fulltime teacher of record, in Sumner County Schools.
Requirements for entry to the program can found on the APSU website linked below. This is not a degree completion program, and you will need to have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, a minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA, and a passed Praxis exam (if degree is not sufficient).

- You will be interviewed for entry into this TEACH Sumner program. Please bring all the documentation that will be outlined in your invite email.

- You may not start employment with SCS until you have been awarded a teaching license in TNCOMPASS and have completed all SCS HR onboarding.

Sumner County Schools Educator Preparation Program: SMART and HEART (Core Academic Programs)
Are you wanting to become a middle school or high school teacher? One licensure requirement is to enroll in an Educator Prep Program (EPP) to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in the classroom. A requirement of the program is that you are hired as a job embedded fulltime teacher of record, in Sumner County Schools.
Requirements for Academic CTE teachers vary but include and are not limited to a bachelor’s degree, a minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA, and a passed Praxis exam (if degree is not sufficient).

Science Endorsements:
- Earth Science 6-12
- Biology 6-12
- Chemistry 6-12
- Physics 6-12
ELA Endorsements:
- ELA 6-12
Humanities Endorsements:

- Government 6-12
- Sociology 9-12
- Economics 6-12
The SMART program serves Math and Science endorsements, and the HEART program serves Humanities and ELA endorsements.

- Complete the EPP Information Form (in addition to the interest survey).
- You will be invited to an interview/meeting where we will go over key points of the program and complete some necessary paperwork. Please bring all the documentation that will be outlined in your invite email.
- If accepted into SCS EPP, you will receive a written notice of acceptance and instructions to complete your enrollment as a job embedded candidate (TNCompass information). Once you have completed all TNCompass Requirements the EPP will apply for you license and endorsement.

Sumner County Schools Job Embedded Process
Interested in teaching, but don’t have a license? By enrolling in a job-embedded program with a college or university that we partner with, you could be teaching in the classroom while completing your coursework.
Each program offers various endorsements, depending on which TDOE-approved programs are present at the school in which you apply/accepted. Each program will include educator prep coursework teaching the candidate how to be a teacher. The university program will be responsible for applying for your teaching license.
Application Process
- Please apply for open positions in your content area with Sumner County Schools. (SCS)
- If you are offered a teaching position with Sumner County Schools, you must contact an educator prep program at one of the SCS partner universities.
- Candidates must complete the university’s application and meet all eligibility requirements of the TDOE/university program.
- You may not start employment with SCS until you have been awarded a teaching license in TNCOMPASS and have completed all SCS HR onboarding.
Sumner County Schools Educator Preparation Program: CTE Teaching to Lead
Are you wanting to become a CTE teacher? One licensure requirement is to enroll in an Educator Prep Program (EPP) to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in the classroom. If you receive an offer to be hired by a school in Sumner County as a fulltime CTE teacher of record, you are invited to apply for our program.
Requirements for Occupational CTE teachers vary but include and are not limited to relevant industry work experience, industry certifications, and approval from the Tennessee Department of Education as a CTE candidate.
Requirements for Academic CTE teachers vary but include and are not limited to a bachelor’s degree, a minimum 2.75 undergraduate GPA, and a passed Praxis exam (if degree is not sufficient).
