ALL SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS MUST BE 21 YEARS OF AGE.

Notes: You must have an email address to create an account and complete your application. The email you enter is how you will receive further instructions throughout the application process.

You must either provide one reference that is of a current employee of Sumner County Schools or a professional reference.

Complete each page of the application. Click Next at the end of each page to proceed to the next page of the application. Attach official transcripts if applicable. Once you have completed the application, you should receive an email confirming your application.

A series of emails will be sent to the email address you provided on your application once the request to hire begins processing in the Human Resources Department. The email series will include information on:

  • Background Checks
  • Processing Hire Task List
  • Onboarding Task List

After all tasks are complete you will schedule your final processing in the Human Resources Department at the Sumner County Board of Education. You will need to bring two (2) original hardcopy forms of approved I-9 documents and any official college transcripts.

You must complete this Final step BEFORE you are eligible to accept any substitute assignments in the system.

To apply, click on the link to Careers with Sumner County Schools, then click on the box that applies to your applicant status, apply for the Sumner County Schools Substitute Teacher Pool for the current year. If you are a current or former employee and have forgotten your ESS password, do not create a duplicate account, contact the IT Help Desk 615-451-6513 to reset your password.

Pay scale for substitute teachers is as follows (All degrees must be documented with the Human Resources Department):

Sumner County Schools pays our substitute teacher daily rates based on position type. Note, there are half-day positions available, which are to be paid at exactly half of the daily rate.

  • Classified Positions
    • $100.00 – ALL Substitutes who sub in a classified position will be paid this amount regardless of degree or teaching license held.
  • Certified Positions
    • $100.00 – Substitute in a certified position without a degree
    • $115.00 – Substitute in a certified position and must have a bachelor’s degree or higher
    • $150.00 – Substitute in a certified position and have an active Tennessee teaching license
    • $150.00 – Substitute in a certified position and must have retired form Sumner County Schools
