Governor Bill Lee Visits Summer Scholars
Governor Bill Lee stopped by Howard Elementary in Gallatin this afternoon. He was joined by other elected officials and Sumner County Schools administrators as he spoke with teachers and students. He visited multiple classrooms including English / Language Arts and STEM.
"Teachers and administrators are working really hard to serve these kids and we appreciate them, and we wanted to come out and look at a model of what's going on across the state in summer programming," Governor Bill Lee said.
Students asked the governor questions about the ins and outs of his job, his visit to the White House, and general questions about the working of the government.
He also paid tribute to HES retiring principal, Cindy Swafford, who has dedicated more than three decades of service to our community. Congratulations to Mrs. Swafford on her retirement!

Project SEARCH Ceremony
Sumner County Schools celebrated our Project SEARCH interns with a special ceremony this morning. Project SEARCH is a class for high school graduates with disabilities that provides on the job training and the skills they need to be productive citizens in our community. This is a year-long training program with the goal of placing each intern in a paid job working 16 or more hours per week. The program is possible through a partnership between Sumner County Schools, Welch College, Vocational Rehabilitation, and The Access Program.
Each intern was recognized for their hard work and dedication throughout the program and spoke at today's ceremony. As the ceremony came to a close, the interns looked forward to their new careers with excitement and optimism. Sumner County Schools wishes them all the best of luck as they embark on this new chapter of their lives as productive members of the workforce.
Thank you Cheerville, George Whitten Elementary, Goodwill, and Welch College Pioneer Dining for giving our students an opportunity and a job.
Sumner County Schools was previously awarded the Excellent Employment Outcome Award for placing 70% to 90% of our students in the work force.

Station Camp High School SET Team Wins First Ever Project Adam Award
Linton Beck's life was saved after going into cardiac arrest during chemistry class at Station Camp High School one year ago. He was only 16 years old. Strong leadership, a school nurse, trained teachers, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) were the perfect combination to save his life.
Children's Emergency Care Alliance of Tennessee hosted their annual award ceremony called Star of Life to recognize EMS and first responders across the state. This year, the alliance decided to present an award called the Project ADAM Award for saving Linton's life.
On Thursday, May 4th our heroes attended the ceremony at the Farm Bureau Expo Center in Lebanon, TN. Recipients include:
- Amanda Welty (school nurse)
- Jeremy Bartlett (teacher)
- Christin Ayre (teacher)
- Andrea Gowan (teacher)
- Rhonda Oliver (response team member)
- Deputy Thomas Briggs (SRO)
Station Camp High School is among 326 schools in the state of Tennessee to achieve the Heart Safe School designation through Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt’s Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory). EVERY Sumner County School has achieved the Heart Safe School accreditation through Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.
Project ADAM aims to prevent death due to sudden cardiac arrest in children and teens. Based at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital, they are committed to making automated external defibrillators (AEDs) available to all children and adolescents everywhere and educate students and school staff through life-saving programs.
Every school in Sumner County has a S.E.T. team which stands for School Emergency Team. These teams consist of the school nurse, school resource officer, teachers, and staff. They are trained in CPR, First Aid, and AED usage. In an emergency, Sumner County Schools staff members are usually the first responders while 911 is called.
We love seeing Linton walk the halls at Station Camp High School every day! To read Linton's full story, click HERE.
