Sumner County High School Academic Teams Head to State
Sumner County has 3 high school academic teams that have advanced to the Tennessee State Quizbowl. The tournament will be held this Saturday, March 5 at Currey Ingram and will feature 16 teams from across the state. Merrol Hyde Magnet, Gallatin High and Portland High will be representing Sumner County in the event. The teams have been participating in tournaments all year and are currently practicing hard in preparation for the state tournament.
Merrol Hyde is led by senior Galen Wei. Merrol Hyde won the Sumner Invitational tournament this year. Wei and junior James Han were both awarded as being one of the top 10 scorers. Brothers Andy Wattanaskolpant and Austin Wattanaskolpant will also be participating in the tournament on the Merrol Hyde team.
Seniors Lucas Bollinger and Jacob Graves lead the Gallatin Green Wave into the state tournament. Both players finished in the top 10 scoring at the Cookeville High Tournament and the Sumner Invitational. Freshmen Gareth Turner and Marley McDaniel will also be playing in the tournament for Gallatin High.
Mickaela Sandlin will lead the Portland Panther team. She has led the team in scoring this season and will be joined by sophomores Emerson Bean and Haylee Brady.

Dr. Lauren Wilson Sits Down With US Secretary of Education
Jack Anderson Elementary Assistant Principal, Dr. Lauren Wilson, was invited to sit on a panel with United States Secretary of Education Dr. Miguel Cardona along with Tennessee State University President Dr. Glenda Glover and TSU Dean of Education Dr. Jerri Haynes. The roundtable discussion included Tennessee State University's "Grow Your Own" teacher pipeline program.
Dr. Wilson says she was grateful for the opportunity and to be serving in Sumner County. She is a proud product of TSU and public schools.
Congratulations to Station Camp Middle School's Boys Basketball
Station Camp Middle School boy's basketball team competed against the best in the state and finished in second place. They were also the TMSAA Section 3-AAA Champions. Congratulations Bisons! Final record was 21-3

10 SCS Students Named National Merit Finalists
Sumner County Schools (SCS) is excited to announce the names of our National Merit Finalists. Less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors qualified for this prestigious honor, and they have an opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million.

More than 1.5 million students entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT, NMSQT), which serves as an initial screen of program entrants.
To become a finalist, these students and a high school official submitted a detailed scholarship application, in which they provided information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
“Our students have earned a prestigious honor for themselves and their schools,” said Dr. Del Phillips, Director of Sumner County Schools. “This recognition is a culmination of their hard work and dedication. They are excellent ambassadors for Sumner County, and we are excited to see what they accomplish in the future.”
Shafer Middle Wins Sumner County Academic Tournament
Sumner County middle school academic teams played in a 15-game regular season that concluded with a seven round county tournament held Saturday, February 12th at Gallatin High School.
16 total teams from Shafer, Merrol Hyde, T. W. Hunter, Rucker-Stewart, Portland West, Knox Doss, and Hawkins middle schools competed in the league.
The county tournament was won by the A team from Shafer Middle. They defeated Merrol Hyde's A team in the finals by a score of 325-275. In the consolation match for 3rd and 4th places, T. W. Hunter's B team defeated Rucker's A team. With the win, Shafer A qualifies for the national tournament to be held in Chicago, Illinois later this school year. Merrol Hyde's A team and T. W. Hunter's B team also qualified for nationals.
The 2022 All-County Academic Team selections were made based on results from the regular season matches. Members include:
