Professional Learning Opportunities

STARS – Rodger and Theresa –“Do I really have to work with you: Improving Workplace Relationships” – 3 hours

Helps adults focus on the importance of having crucial conversations with colleagues, parents and students in schools, community organizations or businesses. Participants will identify and manage relationship breakdowns, coordinate action, achieve business results, value differences, make effective requests, design new and lasting relationships, operate in a strengths-based leadership model, and create an emotionally intelligent work environment.

STARS – Eric Johnson – Move2Stand – 3 hours

MOVE2STAND (M2S) is an interactive training program of STARS that challenges staff to examine their attitudes toward bullying. This half or full day summit creates empathy and helps leaders understand how bullying impacts school climate and communities.  In addition to the summit, M2S also provides a leadership training geared toward school staff, administrators, coaches and school counselors. M2S provides participants with the resources and knowledge required to implement best practices in bullying prevention to positively impact their school climate. There may be a fee for this program.

Poverty Simulation Training – Volunteers – Sumner County Prevention Specialists – 3 hours

The poverty simulation allows participants to take on the roles of members of up to 26 families, all facing a variety of circumstances. Each "family" is given a card explaining its unique circumstances and it is the families’ task to provide food, shelter, and other basic necessities by accessing various community resources during the course of four 15-minute “weeks.” Fifteen to 20 volunteers play the roles of resource providers in the community. The simulation is conducted in a large room. Participants are seated in family groups and community resources are located at tables around the perimeter of the room. The activity lasts about three hours and includes an introduction and briefing by the facilitator, the simulation exercise, and a guided debriefing.

Mental Health First Aid – State Department of Education – Janet Watkins

Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8 hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN? The course teaches participants the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, psychosis, eating disorders, AD/HD, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance use disorder. Participants learn to support a youth developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis by applying a core five-step action plan:

• Assess for risk of suicide or harm
• Listen nonjudgmentally
• Give reassurance and information
• Encourage appropriate professional help
• Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Homeland Security – Internet Safety and the Dark Web - Kevin Liles – 2 hours

Powerful training on the dangers of the constantly changing web and how it impacts our students.  Discussion on the “dark web” and the impact it continues to have on society. 

Tennessee Voices for Victims – Valerie Craig and Verna Wyatt – 1-2 hours

Fees are $175 for a program with a discount for multiple school programs.

Christy Ballard - General Counsel for the Tennessee Department of Education – 2-3 hours

Christy Ballard is a powerful and entertaining speaker will address liability issues and legal obligations of a school system. Topics include mandatory reporting, first amendment rights and supervision requirements.

HomeSafe

In Our Shoes

SafeTeens is a program that focuses on raising awareness among youth, parents of youth and those who work with youth about  recognizing healthy and unhealthy relationships. These issues are addressed in a 90-120 minute educational simulation and discussion called "In Their Shoes." This interactive session involves six teen characters.  As groups are led to different stations, they read through scenarios their character faces with their partner and various systems and make choices about their character’s next steps.   Students and faculty will learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy choices in peer relationships, as they move through scenarios by reading about interactions with their dating partner, family, friends, police, counselors, and others.  Some of these experiences include: early teen pregnancy, social cyber bullying, biases towards the LGTBQ community, cyberstalking and dating abuse.  This exercise also helps to promote empathy and non-judgmental engagement.  Afterwards, there is a debriefing and discussion session that springboards a conversation concerning the warning signs of unhealthy relationships and begins to answer how we create communities where violence does not thrive so that our youth are safe, secure, and aware. 

Workplace Staff Education

A trained professional will come to your workplace and provide employee training to identify the warning signs of domestic violence and sexual assault.    The facilitator will provide practical tools to implement when an employee encounters this situation.

Sumner County Health Department – 1 hour

Overview and impact of the electronic cigarettes, juuls, and the constantly changing trends and products students are using.

Cumberland Heights

One-hour presentation focused on current trends of substance abuse, research findings, tips on how to identify students who are potentially abusing substances and approaches to engage those students. Presenters and staff will remain post presentation for 30 min to answer individual questions.

Stephen Bargatze – 1 hour

Nationally known magician who talks about alternative discipline and how language impacts students and student learning. He will also teach you how to do a magic trick!

GLSEN

A collection of Key Concepts and Terms designed to provide a basic understanding of words, phrases and ideas related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their experiences.

Centerstone

Centerstone offers training on Introduction to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Anxiety, Self-harm, Suicide and Suicidal Ideation, and any other mental health topic. Trainings are free. 

Mental Health America of Middle Tennessee – Dr. Desiree’ Kelly

45-minute workplace training sessions may be combined:

• Classroom Wellness: This presentation focuses on what healthy classrooms have in common, how to manage classroom stress and student engagement.
• Stressors in the Hallway This presentation focuses on different stressors impact on mental health and strategies to reduce stress.
• Depression in the Schools This presentation focuses on different signs of depression and the strategies to help.
• Workplace Wellness for Victim Advocates This presentation focuses on compassion fatigue, burnout and self-care.  (approved for CEUs for Social Workers by NASW) 
• Healthy Communication in the Schools This presentation provides evidence-based ways to communicate effectively with your boss and your peers.
• Work/Life Balance This presentation focuses on setting healthy boundaries and time management skills
