Sumner County operates 46 public schools which serve more than 28,000 students enrolled in kindergarten through the twelfth grade. In Sumner County, we believe the key component to our district's success is high quality, dedicated teachers who are willing to maximize learning opportunites for students. We also believe in employing a high quality administrative and support staff dedicated to providing the best possible environment for our teachers to succeed. We employ approximately 2,200 certified staff and 1,800 classified staff. Listed below are a few of the key reasons that we are able to obtain quality employees for our schools. Sumner County teachers currently participate in the state health insurance program, which includes a choice between PPO, POS, and HMO coverage's. Two dental plans are offered. The Board of Education pays a negotiated portion of the premiums for full-time teachers who enroll in the health insurance program. Life insurance and supplemental policies are available, and Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS), 403b, and 457 plans are available for retirement savings. One reason Sumner County students consistently score above state and national averages is our focus on individual growth for teachers. We encourage participation in workshops and conferences for continuing education. In addition to the information brought back to our schools by workshop participants, the district is fortunate to have many educators with the expertise to present their techniques and philosophies at both the state and national level. Each of these educators serves as a resource for all teachers in the district. Sumner County educators have access to a comprehensive teacher support center. In addition to a professional library for research, the Teacher Center hosts workshops throughout the year. These sessions feature district and outside expertise in the latest teaching techniques. A full range of supplies and ideas are available to help educators construct student learning activities from the ground up. The Teacher Center is open at various times to accommodate our educators' schedules. Sumner County educators are supported by administrators who came from the classroom and who know the importance of classroom teachers. From the director of schools to the classroom teacher, our One Team approach to educating students is the foundation of our success as a school district.
